(KTVI)- The man who is in police custody in connection with the bodies of seven women found in Hammond and Gary, Indiana has been identified as Darren Vann, 43.

Hammond Police Chief John Doughty confirmed his identity during a press conference that was held Monday morning.

He is also a convicted sex offender in the state of Texas.

According to WGN News, Vann was taken into police custody on Saturday, October 18th , after linking him to the death of a woman at a motel in Hammond on Friday night.

The body of Afrikka Hardy, 19, was found in the room of a Motel 6 off Interstate 80. According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, she was strangled.

Hardy’s mother says met the man who’s now in police custody on the internet.

After Vann was taken into custody for Hardy’s murder, he told them where to find the bodies of even more women.

Three victims were found in abandoned homes throughout Gary over the weekend.

The bodies of another three women were found in Gary overnight.

Investigators fear that Vann may be responsible for killing many others in Illinois and Indiana, dating back to the 90’s.
