ST. LOUIS – A man who was protesting in Florissant is recovering after accidentally shooting himself during a demonstration.
The shooting happened Tuesday night, where more than 100 protesters gathered. Police spokesman Steve Michael said the man was carrying a long rifle when it accidentally discharged as he was near officers.
One protester with the RespectUS group said they were marching when someone must have thrown something or did something that upset the police.
That witness was on the other side of the crowd, but said the police started rushing towards them and that’s when everyone started running towards police. He said the protesters were pushing the police to get back.
The man was taken to a hospital with an injury to his right foot.
Protesters painted the words, “Black Lives Matter” on the street in front of the police station. The city has painted over the slogan several times this week.
Tensions remain high more than three weeks after a Florissant officer was shown on video striking a suspect with an SUV. The detective, Joshua Smith, claimed it was an accident, but he was fired and charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor.
Protesters also want the other officers on the scene that night to face charges.
