CLAYTON, MO (KTVI) - For a brief period there was a significant police presence and a smashing of gourds outside of the Justice Center Monday afternoon.
It was a combination of civil disobedience and a little symbolism. Protestors showed up with pumpkins outside Prosecutor Bob Mcculloch's office with the intention of smashing them outside. Police warned that they would be arrested they did. Two people who smashed pumpkins were locked up, along with that third woman who had her pumpkin taken while in the act, and was arrested without having smashed it.
Why pumpkins? It has to do with unrest that led to police in riot gear at a New Hampshire pumpkin festival over the weekend. the leader of the protest explained prior to being arrested.
"The reason we chose pumpkins is just this weekend, the revelers, the rowdy crowd as the mainstream media first started to define these young white folks who were rioting in the streets causing thousands of dollars of damage. They gave these mild terms to them, just drunken revelers." said protester Derek Laney.
The protesters say this is part of the so-called Moral Monday demonstrations that began last week. The small group of people left after their counterparts were arrested, leaving the remaining pumpkins behind. They asked if teenagers will be arrested at Halloween for doing the same thing
