Margo Schuler and her daughter, Shawna, hope by speaking out more victims of bullying will report what is happening to them.
“If you’re being bulled take a stand,” said Shawna Schuler, seventh-grade student and St. Clair Junior High.
“Many parents out here who don’t even know their children are being bullied,” said Shawna’s mother. I was lucky enough to catch it with Shawna and with a lot of help from her friends at the school.”
“There was a racist phrase written on a bathroom wall at the junior high,” said St. Clair R-13 Superintendent Kyle Kruse. “A student actually reported it to us which we appreciate very much. Our kids know that’s not right. I’m glad they told us.”
One parent told us the message was shared repeatedly on social media. Kruse said the district took action as soon as it was notified about the message.
“We did remove the graffiti and now we’re working with the parents and the folks involved to make sure it’s taken care of and this sort of thing is not repeated,” said Kruse.
He said the district was using its resources to track down those responsible.
“Why are we still fighting over race and all that?” questioned Shawna. “This is how so many suicides happen.”
The superintendent does not believe the incident is reflective of a bigger problem. He recalled one other previous incident and said it was verbal in nature but was not part of the message left on the bathroom wall.
The superintendent said the district’s resource officers and the St. Clair Police Department are available to investigate.
The district released the following statement on the incident:
There was an incident in which a racist phrase was written on a bathroom wall. A student reported the incident and the graffiti was removed immediately. Our school resource officer and administrators are working to identify the person that wrote the graffiti and apply appropriate disciplinary measures. We are also working with those who could be affected to ensure their school environment is both safe and supportive. The St. Clair R-XIII School District is committed to providing students a school experience that is safe and free from discrimination. Although we are unable to provide specific information about students or patrons, we appreciate the opportunity to address this incident.
