MAPLEWOOD, MO (KTVI)- The recount in the race for St. Louis County Executive is set to get underway Monday. FOX 2’s Anthony Kiekow is live in Maplewood with why Steve Stenger and Rick Stream are still battling nearly two months after the election.
Steve Stenger is set to officially become St. Louis County Executive on Thursday, January 1st at noon, but the recount in the heated race is also starting this week.
Stenger won the race for county executive back in November. Stenger defeated Republican Rick Stream by nearly 1800 votes. According to Missouri law, the small margin gave Stream the right to request a recount. The question remains, how many votes will actually be recounted?
On election day some polling places ran out of paper ballots which forced more voters to use the elector voting machines. According to Missourians, for honest elections, the use of the electronic voting machines will make it difficult to perform a legitimate recount. The organization says recounting the votes from the electronic voting machines is far more time consuming than recounting paper ballots. As a result, electronic votes likely won`t be a part of the recount.
FOX 2 is waiting to confirm that information with the St. Louis County Board of Elections.
Stream is paying for the recount. He says it will address problem areas in election day operations to ensure accurate and fair voting in the future.
