ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - Seven times a day someone in the U.S. dies in a house fire, and thousands more are injured.  The Red Cross and the St. Louis Fire Department want everyone to know, smoke alarms save lives.  Both are teaming up to install free smoke alarms to anyone who can't afford them in St. Louis and 21 surrounding Missouri and Illinois counties.

A working smoke alarm reduces the chance of death in a fire by 50 percent

Chief Dennis Jenkerson/St. Louis Fire Department: “We used to pull up at a fire and see people did not have working smoke detectors."

Every family also needs to create an escape plan with two routes for every room and practice that plan twice a year.
