ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - Get ready for delays this weekend if you're travelling along Interstate 55 and the Poplar Street Bridge in downtown St. Louis.

Roadwork on I-55 will create closures and delays this weekend, but the Missouri Department of Transportation said the work is all part of a two-year plan.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 8, MoDOT crews will close the ramp from the westbound side of the Poplar Street Bridge to Walnut and the ramp from South Memorial to westbound I-44 and southbound I-55. The express lanes close at 7 p.m.

Michelle Vogel, a MoDOT spokeswoman, said it’s needed to do bridge repair work along I-55 passing through five bridges. It’s part of a $16 million two-year plan.

"Basically what we do is take off several layers of concrete and do deck repairs and close it back up," she said.

The ramps from 7th Street entering and exiting southbound I-55 will also be closed.

The roadwork will be done and the roads reopened by 5 a.m. Monday.

More than 65,000 cars pass through the area every day.

That lane from southbound I-55 to westbound I-44 will be closed until December. The ramps at 7th Street and I-55 will also be closed until December.
