ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – With the Cardinals on the verge of clinching the division, there is an new focus on safety outside Busch Stadium. This comes after gun violence left a House Springs man paralyzed after Friday`s game.

Police Chief Sam Dotson is reacting to the shooting of the fan by promising more officers downtown for post season play. Mayor Francis Slay says he`s giving the chief an unlimited budge for overtime.

Chris Sanna, a 43-year-old Army veteran was at Busch Stadium Friday night to celebrate his mom`s birthday. When Chris and his girlfriend headed to his car parked at the old Cathedral, a man jumped out of a car at Memorial Drive and Walnut and robbed them. They complied. As they started to run away the thief fired two shots one hitting Chris` spinal cord.

Chris’ mother Candis Sanna says her son fell to the ground and the gunman went through is pockets after he shot him. She says Chris thought he was going to take a bullet to the temple but a car came up so the suspect ran back to his car and took off.

Chief Dotson says it is impossible to put a police officer on every corner. “There are officers that are working secondary at the ballgame, there were additional officers managing traffic, there was a supplemental patrol of a dozen officers so there were officers downtown but an officer on every corner is not something we can achieve.”

This is the third time this month a robbery victim in the city has been shot after handing over their possessions to the thief. The chief has asked the FBI to help in the investigation.
