ST. LOUIS – A baby Sumatran orangutan born last month finally has a name.

After more than 67,000 thousand votes cast over an 11-day public voting period, the Saint Louis Zoo announced the baby’s name will be “Ginger.”

Ginger received 43.9 percent of the votes cast on the zoo’s website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, or through ballots turned in at the zoo’s welcome desk, and postcards mailed directly to the zoo.

The other finalists received the following percentages: Lucy, 33.8 percent; Marigold, 14.7 percent; and Cranberry, 7.6 percent.

Baby Ginger and her mother, Merah, can be seen every day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Jungle of the Apes habitat.

Both orangutan species, one native to Borneo and the other Sumatra, are endangered due to habitat loss brought on by the global demand for palm oil.
