ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – A western lowland gorilla, died unexpectedly on Monday afternoon at the St. Louis Zoo. The 27-year-old was in the outdoor habitat at Fragile Forest when he suddenly collapsed at around 1:30pm.

The Saint Louis Zoo reports that a heart condition was the likely cause of death. The final cause of death will not be confirmed until all test results are complete.  Male western lowland gorillas typically live to 31 years of age.

Juma had been diagnosed with a heart condition in November 2011. He had been receiving treatments for problems with his heart muscle for the past four years. An exam in June showed stabilization of heart function.

The gorilla, Juma Adika, was born at the Saint Louis Zoo in 1988.
