GODFREY, IL (AP)- A 13-year-old Boy Scout is being credited with saving his younger sister’s life after she severed an artery falling from a trampoline at the family’s southwestern Illinois home while their parents were at work.
Andrew Goeken of Godfrey tells The Telegraph that he used paper napkins from the kitchen to apply pressure to the compound fracture on the left arm of his 12-year-old sister, Caroline.
That’s something Andrew says he learned from his Boy Scout training.
Andrew then hurriedly called their father, who’s a Madison County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant.
Caroline Goeken later underwent five hours of surgery at a St. Louis hospital.
The girl now has three pins and a screw in her arm to fuse the bones back together. She’s expected to make a full recovery.
