PACIFIC, MO (KTVI) – Police have released pictures of a father and son who disappeared after they said they were going fishing in the Meramec River Tuesday. In a somewhat unusual move, police also released pictures of the wife and her grandchild who was last seen with them.
The move came as officers and rescue crews searched the area for most of the day, Wednesday. It was about 3:00pm when search crews, who kept media away from the site most of the day, emerged, saying they had found nothing.
"It’s very frustrating," St. Louis County Police Sgt. Mike Pleviak told reporters. "We just don’t have any leads right now. I don’t know a lot as far as the investigation goes, just a comprehensive search of the area reveals nothing so at this point everything has been suspended."
While nothing is being ruled out, the sense was given that search teams exhausted their options and would not be back.
"Boats that have gone miles down river as well us upriver. Cadaver dogs. Aerial search. I don’ t know what more you could do at this point," Pleviak said.
Around 10:00am Wednesday, St. Louis County Police said they ended the search, believing the pair left the area voluntarily. By 10:45am, County Police said they still believed the father and son had not drowned, but after conversations with people involved in the case, they resumed the search on the water, on the ground and in the air.
A St. Louis County Police spokesperson says investigators are confident the father and son did not drown in the Meramec.
They still consider the pair missing and are trying to find them.
But investigators now believe the two may have just chosen to leave the St. Louis area altogether voluntarily on their own.
This all started about 12:45pm Tuesday when the wife of Michael Hill, 36, called authorities saying her husband and his son David Hill, 16, had not returned after leaving to go fishing about two hours earlier.
A massive search started near the Pacific Palisades Conservation Area in far southwest St. Louis County.
It was suspended a little after 8:00pm Tuesday when it got dark without any sign of either person.
Hill’s wife was with her husband and step-son when they originally went to the river area around 10:45am Tuesday.
At some point she lost sight of them.
After waiting in the car for a couple of hours she called in authorities.
The wife has met with detectives as the case continues to unfold.
Right now, though, authorities do not think there is anything criminal.
At this point, it’s just a matter of tracking down Michael and David Hill to make sure they are ok.
The St. Louis County Police Department has issued an endangered persons advisory. If anyone has seen the two missing individuals or all four parties, please contact the St. Louis County Police Department at 314/889-2341.
