ST. LOUIS,MO (KTVI)-- For the second week in a row the St. Louis Metro Police Department shut down a portion of Washington Ave.

It will be shut down from 14th to Tucker from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. every Friday and Saturday.

The goal is to curb crime and end traffic jams.

"It worked as we expected it to, and madetraffic better and the area more safe," St. Louis Metro Police Chief Sam Dotson said.

Dotson also said that officers would be carding anyone in the area who looks underage.

"It is an area for 21 and above on weekends," he said.

Dotson told FOX 2 that he was working with bar and restaurant owners on a long term solution to improve the area.

However, until a plan is formulated the closures will likely continue.
