FESTUS, MO (KTVI) – Hazmat crews are cleaning up a chemical spill on the ramp from U.S. route 67 to northbound I-55 in Festus. A tanker overturned on the ramp Wednesday afternoon. Fire officials say the chemical, ammonium nitrate, was quickly contained. I-55 was shut down in both directions Wednesday night as the chemical could be safely removed.
“The crew will have to clean the product up by hand,” said Festus Fire Chief Chuck Boyer. “That means non-spark shovels. Plastic shovels will have to scoop it up into a load, and dump it into a truck.”
Ammonium nitrate is used in a number of products including explosives.
Police Chief Tim Lewis said the driver of the tanker was taken to an area hospital. The driver’s condition was not known. Lewis said speed is often a factor in accidents on that ramp, but it was too soon to say why this tanker overturned.
