EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A serious accident shut down I-55 near Hamel, Illinois. A medical helicopter was called to rush victims to the hospital. There was a large presence of first-responders on the highway. Illinois State Police District 11 Collinsville says that the crash happened at around 9:15am in the median near mile marker 28.
Illinois State Police say that a 24-year-old man who was driving the 1999 CRV from Nixa, Missouri was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. A 25-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was also taken to the hospital by helicopter.
The SUV was traveling northbound on the I-55 this morning and crashed into the median. It is not clear why the vehicle left the roadway but both of the people in the car were ejected during the collision. The white CRV rolled over during the crash and the woman was trapped under the vehicle. First responders were able to lift the SUV off of her.
The highway reopened three hours after the crash. Illinois State Police say the crash is still under investigation. Traffic appears to be flowing normally now.
