ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– The winner of the 2012 Miss Stars of the universe pageant, Teresa Jones, was touched by the story of a mentally challenged pacific high school student allegedly voted to homecoming court as a cruel joke.

“I just felt so sad for her. I did. I got out of bed and thought about how I could help her,” said Jones.

Jones spoke with the director of the beauty pageant about getting the 15 year old sophomore, a crown and a sash as a show of support. No one hesitated to fulfill her request.

“They have agreed to crown her as one of the ambassadors to the stars of the universe. And I would like for her to ride in any parade that she wants to with me this year,” said Jones.

The teen’s father country music singer Rickie Lee Tanner posted information about the alleged prank on his Facebook page and is overwhelmed by messages of support his family has received. Some from students not involved in the plot.

“I never would have dreamed we’d have the large outcry of support we’ve gotten. It’s been unreal. And a lot of people have come forward with information since we made it public,” said Tanner.

Tonya Tanner says her daughter is confused by the incident and thinks everyone is her friend.

“She’s so sweet. Such a kind person and has a good heart,” said Tonya Tanner.

Jones hopes her small gesture will make a big difference in helping to lift the child’s spirits. After all, she believes every girl should be treated like a queen.

“I want her to have the self esteem to do whatever it is she wants to do in life. I think every girl should walk with her head held high and know that they can do whatever they want to do to succeed,” said Jones.

Randy George, superintendent of the school district says administrators take the alleged joke very seriously and are investigating. George says appropriate action will be taken if warranted.
