GRANITE CITY, IL (KTVI) – A St. Louis man wounded in a shooting at a nightclub in the metro east died in a rollover accident while being driven to the hospital, the Madison County Coroner’s Office said Monday.
According to the coroner’s office, the accident occurred Sunday, June 28 just before 1:25 a.m. on Madison Avenue near 15th Street. Investigators with the Granite City Police Department learned the vehicle was speeding northbound on Madison when the driver lost control and the car left the road, striking utility poles and flipping over.
The driver was rushed to a St. Louis hospital and remains in critical condition. A passenger, identified as 38-year-old Lonnie Roberson, was pronounced dead at 2:50 a.m. at the scene of the accident.
Police learned Roberson was present at a Venice club when a shooting took place. Roberson was one of several people struck by gunfire.
An autopsy revealed Roberson suffered a single gunshot wound to the right knee. The coroner said the cause of death will be blunt force trauma from the crash and not the gunshot wound.
Funeral arrangements for Roberson are still pending.
