CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) _ Southern Illinois University is reporting on-campus enrollment this summer is down about 14 percent compared to summer 2015.
The university says there are 571 fewer students taking classes on the SIU campus in Carbondale compared to last year. The 6,381 students enrolled on-campus this summer are 1,334 fewer compared to summer 2014.
University officials note that while on-campus enrollment has dropped, off-campus enrollment increased by 8.5 percent this summer over last summer because more students are opting for online classes.
SIU chief marketing and communications officer Rae Goldsmith cautioned against viewing summer enrollment as a foreboding sign of what’s to come in the fall. Goldsmith told the (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan that “summer enrollment is typically not a significant predictor of fall enrollment due to the many factors that influence student decisions.”
