ST. LOUIS (KTVI) –Organizers of the annual Oktoberfest in Soulard announce that they are canceling the popular event for this year. But others are stepping up to make sure the party still happens.
The Soulard Oktoberfest Benevolent Association, which has put on Oktoberfest since 2004, says it won`t be hosting the event this year basically because of financial problems.
In a statement posted to their website, SOBA says:
"The Soulard Oktoberfest Benevolent Association (SOBA) will postpone its 2016, 13th annual festival, which has been held every second weekend in October since 2004. SOBA’s Board of the Directors took the decision to postpone the festival for one year in light of the need to bring the costs of running the event in line with the revenues. SOBA has been seeking to take the festival to a location in the Soulard area better suited for the number of attendees. However, it will not happen in 2016 and the Board has made a responsible decision to skip the event this year."
When members of the Soulard Business Association heard about this year`s event being cancelled, they took action to host the party and make sure Oktoberfest continues.
Association members say they were worried that if the event didn`t happen this year it would die. Organizers say they have limited time so the party will be smaller than in past years. But we`re told it will still have the traditional food, music and beer.
This year`s event is still in the planning stages.
But the Soulard Business Association says it hopes to have permits and concrete dates in the next couple of weeks.
