ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) _ An eastern Missouri police officer is facing two criminal charges after authorities say they caught him stealing while on duty.

St. Charles County police officer Matthew Howze, a 10-year veteran of the department, is charged with stealing and tampering with physical evidence.

Police set up a sting to catch Howze in the act after receiving an internal tip he might be stealing while in uniform.

He responded Wednesday to a report of an abandoned car. Police Chief David Todd says officers filmed Howze taking several items, including a camera, cordless drill, sunglasses and cash from an unlocked car.

Officers also searched Howze’s home and say they found items taken from the department, including weights.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Howze has an attorney yet.
