ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - First Lady Michelle Obama recognized St. Louis Artworks on Thursday with the 2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.

It is the highest honor for a program of its kind bestowed by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

The nonprofit, located near the Delmar Loop, uses art to help students ages 14-19 attain life skills through various art disciplines, including visual arts, theater and photography.

Approximately 3,000 have participated in the after school and weekend program since it started 21 years ago. Ninety percent go on to college and earn degrees in the arts.
