ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– Seven years ago, Mellvee Shahid was told he had two years to live.
So he decided to do something about it and created the empowerment network.
“We help to empower men in the community and show them that there is hope after prostate cancer,” says cancer survivor Mellvee Shahid.
Shahid was one of many on hand Thursday for the annual St. Louis Men`s Group Against Cancer Luncheon.
“They fund and support cancer efforts throughout the whole region and our clinical trials are making this novel new exciting treatment available to patients in our region,” says Dr. Katherine Weilbaecher from the Washington University School of Medicine.
Donations given by the St. Louis Men`s Group Against Cancer have helped breast cancer trials go from beakers in a lab to bedside treatments in a hospital.
One of the many recipients, Maryville University began a kid`s rock cancer music therapy program thanks to the funds received from this group.
“They help them write a song, they put it to music and then it’s a CD that they have for themselves and their families and so far we have done over 330 songs,” says Maryville University President Mark Lombardi.
That’s music to the ears of the men and women present at today’s luncheon, handing out a quarter of a million dollars and helping others in the fight of their life.
“You know cancer is probably one of the most feared words in the English language so it’s so important to have support and the support of great organizations like the St. Louis Men’s Group Against Cancer,” says Shahid.
