ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – The St. Louis Fire Department is looking for a few brave men and women to join its elite force. The department is short about 43 firefighters. It plans to hire about 50.

Several recruits are undergoing physical fitness tests to determine whether they are fit to join the department. They have a little more than six minutes to complete an obstacle course that includes, lowering and raising a ladder, carrying a hose up a flight of stairs, and dragging a 185 pound dummy.

The recruits selected to move forward in the process will go through a series of interviews before being chosen to undergo sixteen weeks of training in the academy. When they graduate they will earn $37,000 a year.
