ST. LOUIS – A formal announcement by the MLS regarding soccer in St. Louis could come as soon as a month or two. But Carolyn Kindle Betz, who leads the local ownership, says we should be patient.
“We’re one step closer, which we’re excited about but we still have work to do; but the news on Thursday was spectacular,” she said.
Betz says the ownership group had no idea the league was expanding by three teams, not just one. They found out just 30 minutes before everyone else did last week. She also said their stadium design was already planned to be released on Saturday. Now, Betz says they have clarity on what to do next.
“I think we need to go ahead and get more serious with those negotiations to make sure those sponsorship packages…the corporation feels good about…and to continue to work on stadium design,” she said.
Betz says the ownership group meets with city leaders every week.
“(Board of Aldermen) President Reed has made comments to you about other ways to help with the partnership and ownership group. So I would tell you city has been a great partner,” she said.
The two main sponsorships that need to be solidified are naming rights for the proposed stadium and the jersey kit sponsorship. Betz says they are talking with 12-15 companies interested. But that’s not all.
“There is the new Jefferson extension that would go onto Highway 40, so we have to let some of that work its way through, and that’s out of our control,” she said. “But we have a plan ready to go once we get the ok from MoDOT and the federal government.”
Betz wants fans to check out the MLS4THELOU website to see new information about the proposed stadium design and is encouraging fans to use social media to show the league’s board of governors how excited our city is.
