NORTH ST. LOUIS( KTVI)- A St. Louis  resident is speaking  after losing  his home in a house explosion.  The owner is trying to come to grips with what happened and pick up the pieces.

Chris Cork with Living Well Properties  says he's shocked when he found out  what he worked so hard for went up in flames in a matter of minutes. " I could have very well come out of the side of the building and been buried  in a pile of bricks , " said Cork.

Chris  says he's been working day and night trying to make his house a comfortable place to live.   He was out-of-town when he received word his house was up in flames. "It matters not where you live , but how live.  I did some special things and it's gone," said Cork .

The vacant building at Linton and Penrose exploded and collapsed  1:30  Sunday morning, spreading to two neighboring houses,  one owned by Cork. Debris was blown across the street hitting cars and smashing windows. Dominique Thomas was there when the explosion happened. "When I came outside the house was caved-in .The fire was spreading rapidly by the time me and my family got outside.  There was debris that hit my car and the neighbor's car," said Thomas.

Authorities say  the former residents where the explosion happened moved out  more than a week ago and the gas was shut off. Residents in the area say it was a night they will never forget. It's scary, there's a lot of kids that play on this street. For an explosion to happen right in the middle  of the street it's kind of scary," said Thomas.

Investigators were back on the scene Wednesday  trying to determine what caused  of the fire the fire. Residents say they are just happy no one was injured.
