ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– Despite the bitter cold, some 3,500 runners and bicyclists are expected on the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge Saturday morning.
The Run and Bike event is part of the opening ceremonies for this 1,500 foot $350-million bridge which opens to car and truck traffic on Sunday.
This cable stayed bridge is the 4th longest of its kind in the country. It`ll eventually carry all Interstate 70 traffic avoiding downtown. And despite the forecast bitter cold, organizers say the Saturday morning 6K Celebration Run and Bike Ride is still on for thousands of people.
And before all that, there`ll be a small, private ceremony Saturday naming the highway approaching on the Missouri side the Andy Gammon Memorial Highway. Bridge worker Gammon died on the structure while the bridge was being built.
