ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- Operation Food Search gets a generous donation today from all of the Subway restaurants in the St Louis region. The 245 Subways in our area donated $50,000 to Operation Food Search in University City. The money will be used for childhood nutrition programs at Operation Food Search including Operation Backpack.

That`s an effort where kids who qualify for free and reduced lunches at school get backpacks full of food every Friday to help them have enough to eat on the weekends. The backpacks contain enough for six meals.

Subway team members helped prepare the food bags to be given out to the children.

‘Financial donations are critical to operation food fulfill our mission. The food that we put in the backpacks is purchased and we like to have it identical, we like to have it as nutritious as possible for the children who receive these bags,’ said Sonny Schaefer, the Executive Director of Operation Food Search.

Schaefer says the backpack program helps 6,000 kids a week in school districts including St. Louis Public Schools.

The donation helped to kick off the 35th anniversary today of Operation Food Search.
