SHREWSBURY, MO (KTVI) – Members of the Powerhouse Gym in Shrewsbury showed up Monday night for a workout to find out that their 24 hour gym had closed.

With little notice the gym shut down for good shortly after 9 pm.  Those who got to the gym before it closed were given no information about how to get a refund back on their membership.  Monthly dues are $20 but most members pay a onetime fee of $217 dollars a year.  The gym has been in business for 20 years and has more than 2,300 members.

FOX 2 has been getting conflicting reports on who owns the property.  But employees told us the gym had been in disrepair for months.  They say water damage from heavy rain left dangerous mold in parts of the facility.

Shrewsbury police officers showed up to assist with the closing.  That's because when a man came to lock the doors the employees said he was not authorized and the owner would have to do it.  The owner never showed up but instead called police.

Many area personal trainers worked out of Powerhouse.  Karate instructor Sidney Gee also rented space at the gym for his studio and had some 40 students.  An hour before the doors closed he moved out all of his equipment.  After 7 years he's now looking for a new space for his Karate classes.
