O’FALLON, Mo. – Police responded to the 200 block of Casalon Parkway on Saturday night for a 911 call involving a shooting.

When police arrived at the scene they found 29-year-old Catherine Rhodes had been shot. Officers and medics rendered aid to Rhodes but she died.

The suspect, 32-year-old Jamal A. Rhodes, has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and felony possession of a firearm.

Rhodes is being held with a $500,000 bond.

Court records indicate the alleged shooter has previously been sentenced to 4 years in prison for domestic assault.  Residents living near the apartment where the victim was murdered say there were several young children living there as well.

“It’s awful.  It’s such a tragedy,” said neighbor Joe Fox.  “I believe she left behind 3 children and right before Mother’s Day.”

Fox said his son heard some arguing Saturday night but did not hear a gunshot.  He said, “My son was in the bedroom playing with his video game and he heard arguing from the apartment next door and then he heard what he thought was a woman scream.”

Tammy Graham said the apartment complex is normally quiet.  She was shocked to hear a 29-year-old mother was murdered and questioned how anyone could commit such a horrible crime.

“Why didn’t he just leave and divorce her?” she asked.  “For anybody to shoot somebody, it’s just crazy.”
