ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Earlier this year Oak Hill Elementary School kick-off their literacy initiative, where students pledged to commit 20 minutes of each day to reading.
The teachers at Oak Hill Elementary, located in the Bevo Mill neighborhood, are passionate about reading and improving literacy learning among students; many of whom speak English as a second language. One challenge they’ve identified was a lack of books in households.
In response, Board of Alderman President Lewis Reed along with teachers, teamed up with community members to build bookshelves from used shipping pallets. The finished bookshelves will be donated to families and stocked with age/grade appropriate and topical reads.
