BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI) – Home construction site thefts are becoming a major problem in the Metro East. Thieves are making off with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of items.

St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department investigators say the thieves are taking everything from construction materials to high end kitchen appliances being installed in homes.

Authorities are searching for suspects.

The Belleville News Democrat reports investigators have stated over the past year, thieves have stolen more than $500,000 worth of materials at Metro East sites where homes are being built.

Sometimes the criminals are targeting copper wire that they can scrap for cash, but St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson says they are also taking high end appliances.

At one home near Millstadt in October, thieves stole $60,000 worth of items, including a $7,000 stainless steel barbeque, a $5,000 gas fireplace and another $5,000 worth of indoor light fixtures.

Investigators brought some suspects in for questioning in November, but they were released after passing a polygraph test.
