CHESTER, IL. (KTVI) – An inmate at Menard Correctional Center was found dead Tuesday, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
This is the third inmate found dead at the prison this year.
The 35-year-old man was found in a cell that he shared with another inmate.
The IDOC told FOX2 that an autopsy would be performed.
Kevin Hirsch works at the prison and is the President of AFSCME Local 1175.
“It is hard to keep everyone safe when you are understaffed and overcrowded,” he said. “This is a dangerous place with felons.”
In February, Hirsch and other employees protested outside the prison.
It was in response to an attack on three employees.
“An inmate attacked them,” Hirsch said. “We need more resources here.”
Protesters referred to the prison as a “gangster’s paradise.”
There are 850 employees and 3,700 inmates at the prison.
“The numbers tell the story,” Hirsch said.
The prison received eight more inmates and 80 more staff members after Tamms Prison was closed in 2012, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
