FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL (KTVI) – A five alarm apartment fire is under investigation in Fairview Heights. The fire broke out in the Long Acre Ponds Apartments at around 1:30pm Thursday. Everyone was evacuated, so were people`s pets.

One firefighter was overcome by the heat and taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. The fire damaged or destroyed most, if not all, of the 24 apartments.

People`s smoke alarms sounded in their apartments. The fire chief says the building`s overall alarm system that alerts the fire department did not work.

The building was constructed without firewalls, but the chief says it still met building codes because it has a sprinkler system . The building is about 9-years-old. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
