ST. CLAIR COUNTY, IL (KTVI) – Two people died and two others were injured Wednesday morning in a three vehicle crash on Illinois Highway 159.

According to Illinois State Trooper Calvin Dye Jr., the accident occurred at 8:45 a.m. on IL 159 at Mulligan Road.

The traffic report from state police indicates a 1997 Ford Taurus was traveling northbound on the highway, while the other two vehicles—a 2011 Chevrolet and a 2008 Kia—came southbound. For unknown reasons, the 58-year-old driver lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, striking the driver’s side of the Chevy and colliding head-on with the Kia.

The drivers of both the Ford and Kia were pronounced dead at the scene by 9:25 a.m., Dye said. The driver of the Chevy was uninjured.

A 29-year-old male passenger in the Ford Taurus was taken to a Belleville-area hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Meanwhile, an 87-year-old female passenger was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital to be treated for life threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevy, a 70-year-old Belleville man, was not injured.

The exact cause of the collision remains unknown, Dye said. The investigation is ongoing.
