SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, IL (KTVI) – Illinois State Police briefly closed traffic on both sides of Interstate 64 after a tractor trailer carrying liquid nitrogen overturned near Scott Air Force Base.

According to Trooper Calvin Dye, a spokesman for the Illinois State Police, the accident happened Thursday around 7:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-64 near mile maker 19. Police received reports of a tractor trailer moving erratically on the interstate prior to the accident.

The driver of the tractor trailer was killed. The exact cause of death was not given.

The eastbound lanes were reopened by 9 p.m. but the westbound lanes will remain closed for some afterwards while crews clear the scene.
