(CNN)-How does a kitty get from New Mexico to Maine in five days? It's a mystery, but six-month-old Spice figured out a way to do it. She was found at a thrift store in Portland, Maine inside a duffle bag with cat food, cat litter and no tags.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland who is taking care of her did find a microchip and connected Spice with her owner back in New Mexico.

Jeana Roth with the Animal Refuge League, said, “So she went missing October 31st. And showed up, and was found in Portland, Maine Nov. 5. So how she got to Portland from New Mexico in those five days is quite the mystery to us here.”

Spice will stay at the refuge for a few weeks to make sure she's healthy to travel the 2,500 miles home. But the League is hopeful she will be home for the holidays.
