Topeka, KS (WIBW) — The wedding of two fictional wizards attracted hundreds to the front yard of the Equality House Sunday afternoon.
For over a week, Planting Peace had planned a fake wedding between Harry Potter’s Dumbledore and The Lord of the Ring’s Gandalf.
The idea for the wedding came after exchanges were made between the Westboro Baptist Church and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling following a meme Rowling had posted about Dumbledore and Gandalf getting married in the wake of Ireland passing its same-sex marriage referendum.
“I think it’s just about the power of fiction, right?” said Planting Peace Director of Operations Davis Hammet. “All of us love the stories, especially as children, and then we grow older and why do so many people resonate with the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings stories? Because they’re about people seeking justice, struggling through these things and finding courage and strength to do what is right.”
Planting Peace will use donations from the event to help fund bully prevention programs and other ways to counteract hatred.
