That couple was from out of town. They drove up on a violent crash at two Monday morning.
They said a pickup truck rear-ended a passenger car. That sedan lost control on the muddy road on Illinois Route 3 near the new Mississippi River Bridge. The sedan then hit the bridge.
It took Fairmount City Firefighters 30 minutes to cut the male victim from his driver`s seat. The witnesses said the female passenger was thrown out of the car and landed, face-down, in mud. The witnesses they said they held the female victim`s head above the mud, so she could breathe until medics came to help.
The witnesses said the truck driver flagged them down, left the scene and returned once police got to the scene.
There was no immediate word on the condition of the victims, or if there will be any charges.
