ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - The Missouri department of transportation has closed two lanes on westbound I-255 at the Jefferson Barracks bridge so crews could begin "urgent" repairs to the bridge expansion joint.

By rush hour, west bound traffic on I-255 faced a long back-up as vehicles moved slowly in one lane around the repair work at the Illinois river bank.

MODOT spokesperson Kara Price said the replacement of the expansion joint is expected to keep those lanes closed until midnight.  Without the emergency work, the metal joint could have damaged vehicles or caused more damage to the bridge deck.

Price said weather or just wear and tear of traffic could cause the  joint to loosen.  "But the J-B bridge is a relatively young bridge," Price said.  That span will turn thirty years old in September.

Bridge expansion joints allow the bridge surface to expand and contract as the temperature changes and to absorb vibrations.
