(CNN) — The United States carried out humanitarian airdrops to the Iraqi town of Amerli, where thousands of minority Shiite Turkmen have been surrounded and cut off by ISIS fighters, Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said Saturday. The U.S. military also conducted “coordinated airstrikes” against ISIS targets as part of an effort to support the humanitarian assistance operation, he said. Australia, France and the UK also participated in the aid drop.
