ST. LOUIS, MO. IL. (KTVI) – Laura and Dwight Sandeen used to keep each other up at night with their snoring.

'Like a log chain going and I'm sure he's going to have a worse analogy for me,' says Laura Sandeen.
'Chain saws,' says Dwight Sandeen.  'She can drown them out.'

While snoring has been the brunt of many jokes with men and women, it's no laughing matter.

'You can actually shave off up to a decade of your life by not having proper oxygen while you're sleeping,' says Dr. Jackie Demko an orthodontist who treats sleep apnea.
The Sandeens discovered they both suffered from sleep apnea.
Their doctor recommended the CPAP, a device like this you wear to help get you to dreamland.

'If I was home alone I wouldn't wear it like I should just cause I didn't like it,' says Laura Sandeen.  'It's just so invasive on your face.'

Not to mention you look like a dark lord of the Sith.

'Cause I did feel like Darth Vader and that sound is constant air pressure blowing in your face all night long, forced air to keep your airways open,' says Dwight Sandeen.  'It just, then you got the cord and I'd roll in the night and wrap it around my neck.'

So the two turned to their orthodontist who had the answer, who prescribed a sleep apnea retainer.

'If you're snoring or having apnea you're having a collapsing of your airway,' says Chris Straatmann the coordinator for Sleep Health at Demko Orthodontics.  'So what it does is it comes up with a graph across here and depending on where the narrow spot is, that usually determines what type of treatment we need to do, whether we need to open you vertically or bring your lower jaw forward, that kind of stuff.'

No muss, no fuss and no sawing logs or splitting up couples.

'I love it when my wives come in and go, 'You saved my marriage, thank you,'' says Demko.

'Oh yeah, we wake up more happy, refreshed,' says Dwight Sandeen.  'Like you said, you don't wake up as cranky.  So it's really good to have that good night's sleep.'

You could say a simple retainer has made sleeping for these two such a breeze, they can do with their eyes closed, and their air passages open.
