ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A Washington University junior and member of the school swim team shattered the world record for solving the most Rubik’s Cubes underwater in one breath.
Kevin Hays solved eight Rubik’s Cubes while seated at the bottom of a dunk tank at Washington University’s Thurtene Carnival on April 19, holding his breath for two minutes and five seconds. He needed two attempts to set the record.
Hays solved just four Rubik’s Cubes before surfacing on his first try. After a short break to calm his nerves, Hayes set the record, previously held by Anthony Brooks, who solved five Rubik’s Cubes.
The feat will soon be recognized by the Guinness World Records.
Hays said he’ll retire from the world of competitive cubing this summer after competing in the U.S. Nationals in South Carolina and World Championships in Brazil.
