MIDTOWN ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - A major water main break was continuing to cause trouble Wednesday night at Barnes Hospital. The 12 inch main broke at about 10 a.m. under the driveway at Queeny Tower, quickly flooding both the north and southbound lanes of Kingshighway. Police decided to close the northbound lanes because the water was too deep to be safely passable.
Because the break was sending water leaking into the hospital's sub-basement, BJC opted to turn off regular power and switch to an emergency generator. However, the generator gave out leaving the hospital without power. Passengers stuck in an elevator had to be removed by firefighters.
Eventually power was restored, but it was lost again at about 6:00 p.m. forcing 104 patients to be moved to other parts of the hospital. Some surgeries scheduled for Thursday will have to be postponed.
The city opened its Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the efforts of the water department, fire department, police department, and MoDOT because of the importance of Barnes Hospital as a trauma center. Ambulances were able to drive through the flooded intersection to get the emergency room.
