STONY BROOK, NY (KTVI) – A 19-year-old St. Louis man who was swept under the waves off the Long Island coast while attempting to save a person from drowning has died.
The family of West Point Academy cadet Tom Surdyke said he passed away Tuesday night and that his organs would be donated.
Surdyke was vacationing in Southampton last week when he went to save a person drowning in the Atlantic Ocean. Surdyke had been in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital since then.
Our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Surdyke is the son of Tom Surdyke, owner of Missouri-based Surdyke Motorsports.
Southampton authorities did not immediately respond to questions regarding the incident, the Post-Dispatch said.
In the meantime, the group ‘West Point Parents Club of St. Louis’ started the hashtag #PrayForCadetTomSurdyke to raise awareness of Tom’s life and draw support for the family.
