Whole Foods’ Spanish Language Controversy

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Two workers at a Whole Foods store say they were suspended after complaining about being told they couldn't speak Spanish to each other while on the job. The New Mexico league of United Latin American Citizens is more than outraged.

"English and Spanish and our Native American languages are supposed to be treated with perfect equality, that's the law, that's the Constitution." said Dennis Montoya.

In a statement to Action 7 News, a spokesperson says whole foods market does not have "No Foreign Languages Spoken" policies in any of their stores.

LULAC is giving Whole Foods one week to drop their policy, but Whole Foods says they don't have one.

THeir policy is that the default language is English for consistent communication, inclusion and especially for safety and emergency situations.

In this case, Whole foods says the two employees got upset when they thought they were told during a team meeting they couldn't speak Spanish at work.

"They were suspended with pay due to rude and disrespectful behavior, not for speaking Spanish." said Dennis Montoya.

LULAC wants clarification.

"We had some of our members speak with the leadership, the CEO of Whole Foods out of Austin, and they confirm that that's a standing policy: no Spanish spoken on the job."  said RLULAC's Ralph Arenalles.
