ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) -  A young woman is fighting for her light after she was shot early Wednesday morning.  It happened in a north St. Louis neighborhood where police have recently stepped up crime-fighting efforts.

Authorities say homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. The victim is a 20-year-old woman and she was in surgery Wednesday morning for her injuries.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Aubert and Fountain. Investigators say a group of people were sitting in front of the house when a man came up and opened fire.

The 20-year-old woman was shot once in the chest.  We understand the shooter ran away.  Police say callers reported hearing between six and nine gunshots. No one else was hurt.

The shooting happened in the Fountain Park neighborhood where earlier this month, police started hot spot policing in the area to help get criminals off the streets.  Several arrests were made and guns were seized.
