ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – The St. Louis community, the World Bird Sanctuary, and Fox 2 News lost a great friend Friday.
Walter Crawford, founder of the World Bird Sanctuary, died of complications following a routine surgery that morning. Walter had been a part of our Fox 2 News family for years.
He brought a wealth of knowledge and his love of wildlife to our viewers on a regular basis during “Walt’s Wild World” segments. We were lucky to have known him and shared so many special memories with him; too many to count, in fact.
Walter had a style all his own. Only he could have a pelican bite him in the groin—twice, in fact—on live television and still make it through the segment.
He saved a goose that had an arrow through it on live television. He confronted one anchor’s fear of snakes with one really huge boa constrictor. When it snowed, we knew Walt would be calling to make sure we told everyone to remember to feed the birds!
Walter’s love of wildlife was immeasurable, but so was his love of life.
If Walter was in the Fox 2 building, there was laughter in the Fox 2 building. We here at Fox 2 News counted Walter not just as a regular guest on our show, but as a very special friend. He touched our individual lives in so many different ways.
From your countless friends here at Fox 2: We loved you so very much. You will be forever missed, but we know you are now truly soaring with the eagles.
