O’FALLON, IL (KTVI) - You Paid For It investigates an expensive new bridge in O'Fallon Illinois. It's one taxpayers paid for but may not have needed after all.

O'Fallon got the lion’s share of the $6.8 million tab for the bridge, around $4 million, from state grants. O'Fallon put in $2.4 million of its own funds. The bridge was to allow traffic to go over the railroad tracks so motorists wouldn't have to wait for passing freight train.

But O'Fallon got a shock. Right after they finished the bridge CSX Railroad told them they were temporarily shutting down the section of tracks the overpass was built for. The railroad doesn't know when or if they'll use that line again. It all depends on economic conditions. Meanwhile O'Fallon Illinois says it probably can't get back the money for the overpass if CSX Railroad doesn't use the tracks. So this deal may well turn out to be taxpayers money lost.
