ALTON, IL (KTVI) - You Paid For It heads to Alton to talk to the mayor about the city's high tow release fee.

You pay the city a $400 fee to get the tow release before you can go to the towing company and pay hundreds more to get you vehicle  back. I grilled the mayor who defends this fee citing a 2009 study done by the City of Alton. The city council used the study results to set the $400 fee.

Alton is not the only one charging so much. In several other cities, there’s a $500 tow release.

But we found that many others didn't charge anything.

Critics charge that these fees are arbitrary.

Alton is one of 4 municipalities being sued by people who have been slapped with the high fees.

Alton got the original cases thrown out, but the court of appeals reinstated the cases.

And now it's headed to trial.

Meanwhile Alton and others seem to be digging in to protect these fees.
