Missouri Tigers defensive coordinator Dave Steckel has accepted the head football coach position at Missouri State. The announcement came Sunday from the Missouri State campus at a press conference introducing Steckel as the new head coach.
Steckel leaves his position as defensive coordinator with Mizzou. He had worked with Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel since the 2001 season when Pinkel came to Columbia. Steckel, 57, cited an urge to run his own program as the driving force to accepting the head coach position with the Division 1AA Bears.
Steckel will be taking a pay cut as well. He made $600,000 this season with the Tigers. At Missouri State, Steckel will make $270,000 to be the next Bears head football coach.
Steckel will remain with Mizzou through their January 1, 2015 Citrus Bowl game to coach the Tigers defense against Minnesota.
